Personal Insights:
Underworld is unique in terms of its visual outlook, featuring a dismal and Gothic setting encompassed in present-day life. The embodiment of Selene by Kate Beckinsale became quite memorable especially with the character’s tough leather corsets and the overall steely demeanor of the actress, thus changing the landscape of how women were viewed in action-horror films. The film combines so many different elements from the vampire and wolf mythos that it has a great deal of history putting together this universe at war.
The plot of the film can be somewhat twisty, but this is what makes it interesting – the setting and the characters. Lucian, portrayed by Michael Sheen, provides a different perspective of the Lycan’s, fighting against the stereotypes that they are a race of pure evil. This antagonistic complexity helps raise the level of Underworld from an ordinary tale of a vampire and werewolf skirmish.
The action scenes, especially Selene’s martial arts and shootouts are stylish and quite interesting which opened the door for many other films of this kind, where horror is combined with dynamics in a slick super stylish form. Its influence can be seen in further films and television series that fuse traditional Gothic scares with contemporary action.
