Cultural and Social Significance
Social media’s dark side raises concern in today’s world. OChecking out “Killer Influence” for the first time what comes off as a striking realization is how the average 2021 or any 2021 influencer puts themselves through hell melting into the screen with each post, all while acting invincibly safe and all knowing that there is a plethora of obsessive fans ready for them to break the boundary and create altercations, putting in danger their lives and their privacy as well, that the influencer has lied about all along. The blurry lines of trust and friendship destroyed by the flames of hunger for fame.
Critical Reception
Reception for the film has been a bit divided. While some critics appreciate its atmospheric tension and relevance, others blandly commented on the script for leaning on ordinary horror conventions. That said though, there is widespread acclaim for Joy Rieger, specifically in how she depicted the complexity in Alex’s character , being both a social media “influencer” and a fragile person.
Visual and Stylistic Elements
The stalker’s presence is further amplified by the clash between the stylish, polished social media world and the dark, gloomy reality aesthetic that the film is centered around. Moreover, the use of handheld cameras and shaky close-ups increases the paranoia and sense of claustrophobia.
