Synopsis:
Girls Will Be Girls is set against the mesmerizing scenery of the foothills of the Himalayas, and is centered on a 16-year-old, Mira, a diligent student under the strict regimen of her boarding school. Her odyssey takes a rather bothersome twist in her life turning point which is sexual fantasies, rebellion as well as the urge to speak her heart. Alongside her existential struggles, Mira’s relationship is quite a feministic and bittersweet one her mother, Anila. Even though she is quite a clever woman, she does not have a wholesome view of life.
The humor, tension and vulnerability all intertwine as the film presents a tender, and at times, harsh perspective on the relationship between a mother and daughter. While Mira witnesses her own liberation, and muddles through the chaos in her thoughts, Anila’s suffocated dreams and desires come to the surface as buried truth which result in violent then nurturing sequences.
Themes and Significance:
- Exploring Female Desire: The film sheds light on the often-taboo subject of female sexual awakening, addressing it with a candid and empathetic lens.
- Mother-Daughter Dynamics: Mira and Anila’s relationship highlights generational tensions, the impact of societal expectations, and the universal struggle for mutual understanding.
- Coming-of-Age in a Restrictive Environment: By setting the story in a conservative boarding school, the film contrasts Mira’s personal growth with the constraining norms surrounding her.
- Gender and Power: The narrative subtly critiques how patriarchal structures shape women’s lives, especially in traditional societies.

Behind the Scenes:
For Director Shuchi Talati, Girls Will Be Girls is an autobiographic project where some of her complex relationships with mothers and daughters as a daughter’s witness inform her work in Indian cinema. The film was realized independently within a collaborative Indo-French framework, thus involving talents of both states.
The gorgeous landscape of the Himalayas is beautifully integrated into the movie, but one of the main focuses of the film is the many violent emotions that the characters go through. The soundtrack, done by a novice female composer, is full of sadness and rage which deepens the storyline.
