Synopsis
“The film “Gandhi 3” is about a famous Punjabi folk hero, Garry, who is nicknamed ‘Gandhi’ because of the way he punishes the way people give him orders without regard for the law and consequences. The story begins with Garry pulling off all sorts of stunts, delivering justice, albeit in his own uncompromising way, to whom the law would have never even raised a finger.
But things change for him once he comes across a particular storyline of Mahatma Gandhi and thinks about non-violence, persistence, and leadership strategies. After seeing Garry’s character develop as a politician, the question gnaws at him, can violence ever restore justice?
Garry chalks it up to the burden of being a Mahatma Ghandi follower while being pressured by local gang leader Shiva Thakur and the overall corruption. The inner conflict, between his old life and his romantic idea of how things should change only escalates until the two sides explode putting him at the crossroads of whether to continue butting heads or adopt a pacifist Gandhi style of justice.

Production Insights
Director Mandeep Benipal is also a director who has a penchant for strong realistic themes. Given the fact that Dev Kharoud is the lead actor the movie ‘Gandhi 3’ does have the same virulence of the previous two parts though the intent to increase the narratives depth through a more philosophical touch has been attempted.
The film showcases the brutality of Punjab that juxtaposes pristine countryside settings with the urban decay. Avvy Sra’s music is equally important, the viewers’ adrenalin rushes during the action and the sad parts are coupled with beating hearts and melodies respectively.
Critical Reception
While Dev Kharoud’s performance has been lauded for its intensity and depth, the film has faced criticism for its pacing and over-reliance on formulaic action sequences.
- Positive Reviews: Critics have praised its ambitious attempt to weave Gandhian principles into a modern-day narrative and its exploration of complex themes like redemption and societal reform.
- Negative Reviews: Some found the film’s execution inconsistent, particularly in balancing action with its philosophical elements. Fans of the previous installments felt the movie didn’t match the high-octane energy of its predecessors.
Key Performances
- Dev Kharoud delivers a commanding performance, effortlessly transitioning between intense action and introspective moments.
- Aditi Arya plays Garry’s love interest and moral anchor, lending emotional depth to the story.
- Dakssh Ajit Singh as Shakti and Jimmy Sharma as Shiva Thakur provide formidable antagonists, adding layers of tension and conflict.
Cultural Significance
In the greater framework of the Punjabi film industry, ‘Gandhi 3’ stands out as an interesting experiment to combine the local folklore with international issues. It articulates that the essence of what Gandhi interpreted is not restricted by temporal or spatial limits but can be a beacon of hope in any time of warfare.
