Production
Filming of ‘Chateau’ took place on location on the Chateau Haute Jaure in the Bergerac region of France. Making a choice to film in an age-old estate directly brings out a plausible breadth of reality in the visuals of the movie. The ambience of the chateau is quite haunting, due to its lack of renovation and, thus, decaying walls, dark hallways and desolate gigantic rooms.
Themes and Aesthetic
The narrative deals with ambition, the morality associated with becoming Instagram famous, and the effects of loneliness. The film is not a straightforward collage of interviews with the girls; it employs various cinematographic practices to aid in conceiving of the work. The contrast of the modern world in the form of a vlogger James amidst the aged, ghostly landscape depicts a sense of time in between the past and the present.

The film’s exploration of psychological terror, rather than relying solely on jump scares, has been particularly noted. It has drawn comparisons to films like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity for its use of self-recorded footage but stands apart due to its gothic influences and rich historical backdrop.
