Synopsis
Freedom is set in the 19th century and depicts the quest of a group of slaves who literally stake their lives for their freedom. Sometimes focusing on the real and at times fictional characters, the film recounts the traumatic events that befall a brave woman, Ruth, and her family when they try to escape through the Underground Railroad system. They are among abolitionists and sympathizers who at great risk to themselves assist enslaved individuals in fleeing to the northern states crossing many perils in the process.
As Ruth and other escapees travel through the enemy lands, Freedom shows the grit, the hope, the tribute which sustained so many who sought freedom in the first place, even if it seemed temporarily unrealistic. Personal Insights
Freedom is a film that has all the potential of being a game changer film as it will not only give you a tell a story that touches on many levels emotionally but also strive to education and provide an insight into one of the most darker moments of history. The rumored casting of Viola Davis is in fact remarkably pleasing; she has so much emotional strength that she is able to handle forceful characters which install perfect balance for a character like Ruth. If Antoine Fuqua is in fact in charge then he possesses the ability to create a film which is both filled with a significant storyline and action sequences as well.
The journey on the Underground Railroad is likely to film about in a step by step approach as well as highlighting the real drama attached to each choice made, showcasing the bravery of those who tried to run away. Freedom seems to be interesting especially with A-list actors on board as it may uncover different narratives on individual and collective stories of resistances and making them more global on the issue of slavery and freedom.
Cultural Significance
Such films such as Freedom are important for they project the underrepresented and unexamined pasts to the world, honoring the spirit of those who fought for freedom and the partners that accompanied them. Given that there is an ongoing conversation about race, justice and equality, this film can be seen as both a history lesson about earlier events and a motivating force for the present and future generations.
In the last few decades, narrative focus has shifted around historical films about slavery and liberation as they are no longer just about chronos but kairos, that is, they are a vehicle for discussion, offer information and empower those who lived and survived the experience. It seems that Freedom will join this genius and these narratives will be impactful and encourage awakening of social consciousness.
